Bermuda Historical Facts & Developments

Hotel   Juan de Bermudez, a mariner discovered Bermuda in 1505, but he did not claim for the land as the island was surrounded by the treacherous reef and uninhabited. But in 1609, British colonists headed by Sir George Somers was shipwrecked and stranded on the island.

After the English colonization, the island prospered and continued to do so almost continuously ever since. It is one of the oldest colonies of the British and it reflects in the culture and traditions in the atmosphere of the island.

In 1612, 60 settlers headed by Governor Thomas Moore were sent to the island and started the construction of St. George town. Later on the island was sold to the Bermuda Company from Virginia Company.

The economy of the island depends heavily on international financial services especially insurance and reinsurance and tourism. The main religions of the island are the Anglican, Roman Catholic and African Methodist Episcopal. English is the most widely spoken language along with the Portuguese among the small Portuguese population. According to an official estimation, the population of Bermuda is around 66,536 people in 2008.
